A plush penguin toy gets a genuine penguin grooming in Antarctica.
“Isn’t anthropomorphism fun? I love the humor of this picture and imagine it took a bit of patience to get this frame-however staged the situation may have been.”—Chris Combs, National Geographic news photo editor

After watching March of the Penguins, David and his wife decided to visit Antarctica. They traveled aboard the National Geographic Explorerand saw some adorable Chinstrap Penguins first hand. I’m so inspired.

Andrew Evans reflects on Sir Ernest Shackleton
Apparently Andrew Evans and I have more in common than I realized. In a recent blog entry, Andrew describes his brutal hike in South Georgia where so many years ago Shackleton traveled searching for help so he could save his crew. I’ve read all about his remarkable journey in Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage and watched the documentary narrated by Liam Neeson, The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition. Shackleton was the ultimate explorer, adventurer and hero.

Bus 2 Antarctica
Andrew Evans is on an extraordinary journey. It all began in Washington DC on January 1st. He spent over 45 days traveling by bus through Mexico, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and finally arrived in Ushuaia, Argentina (see map for full route) where he boarded the National Geographic Explorer bound for Antarctica.
Meet Andrew. Yes, he is wearing an awesome National Geographic Penguin Shirt. Fun fact, he adores penguins.

During his three weeks in Antarctica, Andrew took this photo of a Black Penguin.

He wrote that it’s a “rare melanistic trait that’s practically undocumented” on king penguins.
Andrew is traveling with NG photographer, Cotton Coulson (@cottonkeenpress) who took this amazing shot.

Follow Andrew’s adventure on Twitter: @bus2Antarctica and his blog.
