"Every so often a curious penguin finds himself wandering into the kitchen …and they don’t always willingly go out again!"

  • The 9 Major Threats To Penguins Plus A Glimmer Of Hope

"An international team of biologists scoured reports and research going back nearly 250 years, covering all 18 species of penguin (most of which are endangered or threatened), from the little blue penguin to the four-foot-tall emperors. They identified nine ways humans pose problems to penguin:
1. Penguins killed for their oil, skin and feathers 2. Penguins killed as crab or rock lobster bait 3. Egg harvesting 4. Habitat loss5. Marine pollution 6. Bycatch and competition from the fishing industry 7. Climate change 8. Environmental variability 9. Disease and poisoning from toxic algae
The silver lining is that penguins are tough critters. Many populations of penguins appear to be resilient, populations can recover from relatively low numbers once threats are removed.”

"The first one plopped in and began gliding through the water, creating tiny air bubbles and poking her beak out of the water every so often to grab some air before she dove back down again. The second one quickly followed." Read more.Photo by Robin Riggs.
